The Challenge

Natural habitat logs look straightforward on a specification sheet. No splinters. Gaps between 8 and 20mm. Branch stubs under 100mm. Minimal decay. In practice, every log is different, and the gap between what a spec describes and what arrives on a flatbed can mean weeks of remedial work: inductions, equipment hire, on-site tool permissions, and all the disruption of modifying heavy timber after installation.

Symal was delivering the Bluff Road works in Hampton East and needed nine habitat logs for the parks and gardens of a new commission building. The logs had to meet the safety requirements of a permanent public installation and the aesthetic vision of the project's landscape architects, all in a live project environment.

Arborcraft knows this gap well. The team has spent time on other sites fixing exactly this problem: removing splinters from school playground logs, filling hollows and addressing decay in timber that should never have been installed that way. That experience shaped the approach we brought to Bluff Road.

Key challenges:

  • Meeting highly specific safety and aesthetic requirements for a permanent public space installation
  • Working with natural timber, where every log is unique and a written specification alone is not enough
  • Landscape architect review with limited in-person availability
  • Avoiding remediation after delivery on a live site

Project details:

  • Client: Symal
  • Project: Bluff Road, Hampton East, Victoria
  • Timeline: December 2025 to April 2026
  • Services: Timber reuse consultancy, collaborative log selection, preparation and quality control, delivery

Choosing the logs together

Rather than working from specifications alone, we invited the Symal team to the yard. From hundreds of logs in inventory, we pre-selected candidates that met the project requirements, laid them out for review, and walked through each one with the project supervisor and team, comparing every log against the specification and deciding together which were suitable.

Once the logs were chosen, every one was prepared at the yard: cut, cleaned and finished to specification. Landscape architects were invited to inspect the finished logs in person. When they could not attend, we photographed every log from multiple angles so they could review and sign off remotely. Any feedback came through at this stage, exactly as intended, so nothing needed resolving once the logs were in the ground.

Our approach:

  • A collaborative yard selection session, with the client team present and logs pre-selected and laid out for review
  • Specification-by-specification assessment of each log in the final selection
  • Full preparation and finishing of the selected logs at the Arborcraft yard, drawing on two decades of carpentry knowledge to choose the right tools and techniques for each log
  • Detailed photographic documentation for remote approval
  • Safe, engineered delivery to a tier 1 job site, with logs secured on recycled pallet packaging to prevent rolling and damage in transit, and a telehandler used for precise placement on site

Nothing to fix on site

Nine habitat logs were delivered to Symal at Bluff Road in early April 2026, meeting all specifications. Since installation we have received no remediation requests and no defect reports. What the Symal team signed off in the yard is what arrived on site and what went into the ground.

Key outcomes:

  • 9 habitat logs delivered to specification, with zero defects requiring remediation
  • Delivered within 4 months of the brief, on time and to specification
  • A collaborative selection process that removed the risk of rework after installation
  • Photographic approval that let landscape architects sign off without attending in person
  • Maintenance guidance provided at delivery, so the Symal team can care for the logs over the long term

The Arborcraft difference

Hope is not a quality control process. With natural timber, what passes on paper can fail badly in person, and our collaborative selection model exists because we have seen what happens when that step is skipped.

Bringing clients into the selection is risk management, not extra service. An hour in the yard comparing logs against requirements costs a fraction of a day's remediation on a live site. When the truck arrives on delivery day, there is nothing to argue about: the client has already seen the logs, approved the preparation and signed off on the photos.

The relationship does not end at delivery. We work as a long-term partner, advising on what to expect from natural timber over time and how to keep installations in good condition, because a project done properly is one worth looking after.

For a tier 1 contractor like Symal, delivering permanent public infrastructure, that kind of care was what the project needed.

"The team at Arborcraft made what could have been a complicated process genuinely straightforward. Being able to come to the yard and select the logs ourselves, and see exactly what we'd be getting before anything was delivered, gave us complete confidence. When the logs arrived on site they were exactly what we'd approved. No surprises, no rework."
